Professional Sports in Phoenix

Phoenix is a great sports town with many successful teams.  Be sure to check who is playing, be it basketball, baseball, or football season, and take in a game.  There is always something to watch!

Phoenix Suns – US Airways Center

The Suns play in the NBA’s Western Conference.  They are the only non-California team in the Pacific Division.  This team, which calls the “Purple Palace”, has become one of the more successful teams in the league, and in fact – with their great in-season record, nine Conference Finals and two Finals appearances – are the winningest team to have never won the Championship.  Take a trip down and watch Vince Carter and former MVP Steve Nash!

Phoenix Mercury – US Airways Center

This WNBA team plays in the same arena as their NBA counterparts, the Sun.  Since their 1997 debut as one of the original WNBA teams, they have had some ups and downs but recently have been very successful.  They have won three Conference Titles, and in 2007 and 2009, took the Championship trophy.

Arizona Diamondbacks – Chase Field

The Arizona Diamondbacks are in the National League of MLB.  They won a World Series Championship in 2001, just four years after their inception – a record!  They just retired the number 20 of Luis Gonzalez who holds nearly all of the team’s records for hitting.  Go check out their rebuilt team in their recently changed uniforms and colors!  Many teams also hold their Spring Training in the area.

Arizona Cardinals – University of Phoenix Stadium

If football is your game, you’ll have to take a short trip to Glendale to catch the Arizona Cardinals.  Having been founded in 1898, they hold the record for oldest continuously playing football team in America, although they have played in three different cities – Chicago, St. Louis and Phoenix.  The have won two pre-merger Championships in Chicago, and have been to the Super Bowl once since coming to Arizona.  Check out the exciting Larry Fitzgerald!  The only player from the Arizona years to have his number retired was Pat Tillman who left the team to go to Afghanistan and was tragically killed.
