Happy Thanksgiving from Zazu Pannee

All of us here at Zazu Pannee just want to say Happy Thanksgiving!  This is one of our absolute favorite holidays with the great spirit and, of course, the amazing food!  We have a Thanksgiving fun fact for you this week.  Ever since the beginning of our country we have celebrated this holiday, but at different regularity.  The first Thanksgiving Day Proclamation, though, was made by our very first president, George Washington, in 1789.  He declared another day in 1795.  Later on it became an annual event.

Phoenix Celebrities - Stevie Nicks

This week on our profile of local celebrities, we want to talk about Stephanie Lynn Nicks - better known as Stevie Nicks!  Nicks became one of the most popular singers of the 70s as part of Buckingham Nicks and then Fleetwood Mac.  During this time she helped produce many hits that are now standards, especially with the album Rumors which is one of the top-ten selling album of all time!  Following the breakup of Fleetwood Mac and her breakup with Lindsay Buckingham, she started a wonderful solo career that has continued up until today!

It all started, though, at Good Samaritan Hospital.  Nicks was born here in Phoenix, and got her musical start from her grandfather who was a country singer.  Her parents sheltered her and she moved around a lot as her father's job required a lot of relocation, but she is a product of the West, living in Arizona, New Mexico, Texas, Utah and California in her childhood.  Thanks Stevie, for all of the great music!

Phoenix on the Big Screen - Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure

Arizona has some great scenery, which has led many movies to be set and or shot here.  This week in our discussion of Phoenix in film, we wanted to talk about Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure.  In 1989 this Stephen Herek directed movie was released, staring Keanu Reeves and George Carlin, among others.  It is a silly science fiction comedy.  In this film two not-so-bright high schoolers, Bill and Ted have to pass history class, and so their future selves send Rufus on a mission to help them and save future society.  Rufus helps them by taking them on a crazy trip using the time machine to help them "live" the history they must learn.  The film was popular when it came out and is now a cult classic.  Though the town Bill and Ted live in is supposed to be in California, the film was primarily shot in Phoenix and Scottsdale.

Fire Danger in Arizona

This summer has not been a good one for fires.  The lack of rain has made the wildfire risk very high, and the danger when they do occur even worse.  We all saw the terrible devastation in Colorado, and similar kinds of fires, although let dangerously located in Utah.  We are going through a period of some bad burns ourselves now.  Lightning started various fires this past week, the worst in the northern part of the state.  It has now consumed over 1,400 acres.  The East Fire, as it is names, isn't the only one over 1,000 acres currently, and there are many smaller.  Do what you can to conserve water and to keep fire danger as low as you can in your area.

Phoenix Swimming Pools

Living in Phoenix in the summer can be a huge challenge.  It gets hot here.  REALLY hot.  So we can't imagine an Arizona summer without the amazing pools and aquatic resources we have at our fingertips.  You really can't survive this time of year without stopping by!

Rhodes Aquatics Complex -

This is a full service kind of place.  They have the standards - pool, swim lessons, concessions, etc.  But they also offer much more.  You can not only play water-polo or learn to synchronized swim, but can also take advantage of their "beach", the FlowRider attraction or dive.  They also have great stuff for little ones to enjoy, and it is cheap!

Foothills Rec and Aquatic Center -

This is a large recreation complex, but they have a very well developed aquatic center.  They offer lessons, have a few huge slides, as well as plenty of space to just lay back and relax.  They have a water playground for the kids and a float river.  You can also dive, do lap swim, or take other fitness classes!

Pecos Pool -

Much like the other pools discussed, if you are in for lap swim and the standards, they are available (this pool hosts competitions regularly), but there are many other amenities as well.  There is a beach entry, diving and some awesome slides.  There is a little something for all ages, and this is another cheap place to beat the heat…even better!

Higher Education in Phoenix

Phoenix is a city with a lot to offer, including educational opportunities.  To give you an idea of some of what is there we have told you a little about some below.  There are chances to benefit from these schools either by checking out a game or taking in a student show!

Arizona State University -

Arizona State University is one of Arizona's best schools.  It is in Tempe, in the Phoenix Metro Area.  It was founded in 1885, and has grown from a normal school to a full fledged public university.  They have four campuses now and a wide variety of programs.  ASU also has D-I sports and competes in the Pacific-12 Conference.

Arizona Christian University -

Arizona Christian University opened in 1960, and is a non-profit religious school.  It is a nondenominational seminary.  They are slowly expanding, but the vast majority of their degrees are religious in nature, and students are required to be active members of a church.

American Indian College -

There is also the American Indian College, which is another Christian school.  It was established in 1857, around the same time as American Indian College.  They are open to all, but put an emphasis on Native American students, and have 25 tribes represented.

Food Trucks in Phoenix

We talked about some of the nice restaurant options in Phoenix, but we are also up on the new food truck trend.  You can get all kinds of tasty stuff on the go!  Many of these trucks will also cater events.

Torched Goodness -

For a unique food truck experience catch Torched Goodness.  They do to order Crème Brûlée.  They have the standard, sure, but they also have over 30 other flavors, and that number keeps going up!  Chef Eric, the owner/chef uses local ingredients to develop his creations like PB&J or lavender!

Jamburritos -

For a little taste of New Orleans in Phoenix head to Jamburritos.  They specialize in taking cajun food and stuffing it in a tortilla, as well as other fusion creations.  They work hard to keep things tasty but healthy!

Shine Coffee -

For your morning fix there is Shine Coffee.  They set up at many festivals, farmers markets and other events.  They buy local beans and use only the best.  They have plenty for your kids too!

Shopping in Phoenix

Beat the Phoenix heat with a few hours shopping in one of their beautiful shopping complexes.  There are some great options from affordable to classy!

Kierland Commons -

For a very pleasant shopping experience you should head to Kierland Commons.  It is a complex that includes shops, theaters and restaurants as well as some residential buildings.  There are just under 100 high-end shoots from Chico's to Anthropologie.  You can get a wide variety of food, so there is something for everyone!

Biltmore Fashion Park -

This is one of the most upscale places you could shop, and it will be worth your while.  The grounds are beautiful and very popular.  There is a Saks Fifth Avenue as well as other designer shops like Ralph Lauren.  This is Phoenix's first place for luxury shops.

CityCenter of CityNorth -

On a more affordable level for most, there is CityCenter of CityNorth, a shopping center with many mainstays, like Guess, Sunglass Hut and more.  There are also some great places to grab a drink or a bite to eat here.  It is a newer place with shops for all ages.

Breaking News in Phoenix

There has been some big news in Arizona lately, especially with the national attention related to the Republican Primary.  There is plenty to read about so keep looking!

Republican Primary -

To start with some big news, last night Mitt Romney won the Arizona Republican Primary with about 50% of the vote.  He remains the front runner and took Michigan yesterday as well.  He had the backing of Senator and former presidential candidate John McCain, which couldn't have hurt here!

Sports -

In the sports world we are going through some ups and downs.  In the hockey world, the Coyotes just completed a big upset by beating the Vancouver Canucks 2-1 in a shootout.  Meanwhile, however, the Suns have been struggling in the NBA.  We are hoping they will get back on their feet here soon.

Police -

Phoenix has been interviewing for a new police chief to take the reigns.  They are getting close to a decision and have narrowed it down to four candidates, including a few local boys and the former police chief of San Jose, CA.

Courts -

A recent report claimed that compared to similar sized cities, the Phoenix court system is very good.  The main thing they still need to work on is technology to make processes and service better, although there is room for improvement in other areas as well.
